Manchester United are considering a shock move for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, who is ‘unhappy’ with his minutes this season.
Nkunku has struggled for regular first-team football at Chelsea with Nicolas Jackson preferred in the Premier League. The Frenchman has started only once and totalled just 155 minutes of league action so far this season.
His lack of football has come despite a prolific record in cup competition. Nkunku is Chelsea’s leading scorer across all competitions with 10 goals, averaging a goal every 68.8 minutes.
The 26-year-old is reportedly growing unhappy with his sporadic involvement at Chelsea and L’Equipe are claiming that Manchester United are prepared to offer Nkunku a route out of Stamford Bridge.
Ruben Amorim officially begins his reign as Manchester United manager on Monday and a lack of goals is something the new head coach must address.
The Red Devils have scored just 12 times in the Premier League this season, as many as newly-promoted Ipswich Town and less than 19th-placed Wolves.
Enzo Maresca discussed Nkunku’s minutes this week and said he has felt ‘shame’ at the lack of league opportunities handed to the France international and teammate Joao Felix.
“Christo, every time he plays, he scores, and he does well,” Maresca said.
“Also, he was probably our best player in pre-season, no doubt. He was playing then as an attacking midfielder and now we are using him as a nine, which we all know isn’t his position – he’s more a second striker or between the lines.”
Nkunku scored 58 goals across his final two seasons at RB Leipzig and was the Bundesliga’s joint-leading scorer in 2022/23 before his £52m move to Chelsea.
However, his debut season with the Blues was decimated by injuries and he started just twice in the Premier League last season.
