Manchester City have announced the signing of French international Rayan Cherki.
It is City’s third confirmed transfer of the summer, following the signing of Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
The 21-year-old has arrived at the Etihad on a five year contract for a fee of £30 million with a further £5 million in potential add-ons.
Pep Guardiola’s side were expected to be active in the transfer market the summer, following a disappointing 2024/25 campaign. The Blues ended the season trophyless for the first time in nine years, and just the second time in Guardiola’s managerial career.
City have acted fast so far in the transfer window, as they look to get deals across the line ahead of the Club World Cup.
Cherki arrives at the Etihad following an impressive season with French side Lyon. The attacking midfielder recorded 19 goals and assists across 30 league matches last season. He recently scored and assisted for his national side in a 27 minute cameo against European champions Spain.
Lyon finished 6th in Ligue 1 and reached the Europa League quarter-finals. However, their financial situation meant that they have to sell the summer. Cherki was their hottest asset and after links with various top clubs in Europe, City have secured his services.
The 21-year-old revealed: “This is a dream for me. Honestly, to be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special.”
Cherki will join City in time to represent them at the Club World Cup. He continued: “I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can’t wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff.
“Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace.
“I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future.
“I can’t wait to show City fans what I can do.”
