In May 2023, Luton Town were celebrating a remarkable promotion to the Premier League. Now, they're bracing for a season in League One after suffering back-to-back relegations.
Luton's second successive relegation was confirmed after a 5-3 defeat at West Brom at the Hawthorns
They were relying on results elsewhere, but it wasn’t meant to be. Hull City grabbed a vital point at Portsmouth, Preston held Bristol City to a draw, and Derby and Stoke played out a goalless draw.
Plymouth were almost down before the final day, and Solomon’s last-minute winner at Home Park sealed their fate.
Cardiff City finished bottom after a 4-2 loss to Norwich City, rounding off a woeful season with no wins in their last eight games.
The Hatters are the fourth team in history to suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to League One.
Swindon Town were the first to do it at the end of the 1994/95 season, with Wolves doing it in 2013.
Sunderland repeated the feat in 2018, and now Luton have become the latest team to join this unwanted list in English football.
