Swansea City were on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller when they hosted Leeds on Sunday

Luke Williams has responded to the major flashpoints of Swansea City’s dramatic 4-3 loss at home to Leeds United on Sunday.

The seven-goal thriller fell in favour of the Whites, with Wilfried Gnonto sealing all three points for the away side with a stoppage-time goal.

The Swans twice led before falling behind 3-2 from a 73rd Manor Solomon strike, but a 90th-minute goal from Florian Bianchini had home supporters convinced that they’d earned a point from the game.

However, Leeds responded almost immediately to regain their lead, moving Daniel Farke’s side top of the Championship table in the process.

Both Solomon and Gnonto’s goals originally drew the ire of the home crowd as many were convinced both had been in an offside position, but replays showed that they had just about maintained an onside position.

Williams has admitted that Leeds’ two final goals show the level required to compete at this level given they were able to just about remain onside with perfect judgement.

He believes that there should be no reason to express their frustration at the referee team, instead praising Farke’s side for their quality.

"Not offside. I've been told," said Williams, via the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"They were marginal but onside. That's top-level football.

“They can play on very fine margins and still not make mistakes.

"Playing with speed and precision is very difficult.

“The actions are just right.

“No point being frustrated by the officials when they got it right."

An eighth-minute goal from Harry Darling first gave Swansea the lead, before Liam Cullen restored their advantage on the stroke of half-time after Soloman equalised in the 20th minute.

An own goal from Ben Cabango made it 2-2 before the hour mark.

Swansea City league position

The defeat has left Swansea 14th in the Championship table, seven points adrift of the play-off places.

Williams’ side have now lost two in a row, with the gap to the relegation zone only four points after 16 games.

Given the team’s struggles this year have been their lack of goals, it will be particularly frustrating to put three past a side chasing automatic promotion and still not come out with even a point.

Up next for Swansea is a midweek trip to Pride Park to face Derby County on 27 November in an 8pm kick-off.

Williams is gracious in defeat to Leeds

The manner of the defeat to Leeds would’ve been a tough pill to swallow because a late winner in a seven-goal thriller will be quite mentally draining.

But Williams has come out and been quite gracious in defeat, which is nice to see and a fresh change of pace.

Swansea need to find a good balance between their solid defensive performances this season, and the attacking intent they showed on Sunday.

If they can manage that then they will certainly head in the right direction with Williams, after a difficult few years for the team since their play-off final defeat in 2021.
