Romelu Lukaku ‘absolutely’ denies disagreements with José Mourinho but concedes that ‘something happened’ at Roma, insists he doesn’t hate Inter and reveals he’ll end his career at Anderlecht.
The Belgian striker released an interview with Corriere dello Sport, discussing – among other things – his relationship with Antonio Conte and how the Italian coach has changed his career.
Lukaku also spoke about another influential coach in his career, Mourinho, who worked with him at Manchester United and Roma.
The Giallorossi sacked the Special One in January 2024 amid disagreements with part of the dressing room, but Lukaku insisted he never had problems with the Portuguese.

“Absolutely not. José is a winner. I had him twice, first at Manchester United and then at Roma,” he said.
“Something happened between him and I don’t know who, and I didn’t want to get involved. I will never speak badly of José. At Roma, he didn’t have a top squad, but he still went all the way. I always wish him the best, he’s doing great things in Turkey too.”
Lukaku is Napoli’s best scorer this season and has been in good shape since the start of the season.
“I’m actually better now than I was then. At Inter, I weighed 101 kilos; here at Napoli, I’m 99. But my ideal weight is 102. I never eat in the morning, I follow a strict diet.”
Lukaku spent two seasons at Inter from 2019 to 2021 and returned to the club on loan in 2022.
However, when the Nerazzurri were ready to sign him permanently in 2023, Lukaku decided against returning to the Stadio Meazza.
“I never hated Inter, never. If someone was talking, especially during that period, it wasn’t me,” he said.
Lukaku was on excellent terms with his ex-Inter teammate Lautaro Martinez but hasn’t spoken to the Argentinean since 2023.
“He’s a great player and a great guy,” said Lukaku.
“He deserves everything good that’s happening to him. He’s worked hard for it. A player like him is precious for the league. The stronger the players, the more prestigious Serie A becomes.”
Lukaku confirmed that he wouldn’t consider international retirement.
“I’ve only spoken to [new Belgium coach] Rudi Garcia once, for half an hour. He roughly explained his plans,” said Lukaku.
“I’m waiting to meet him again. I never thought about leaving the national team, where a new generation is emerging.”
Lukaku is under contract with Napoli until 2027 but has already decided where he will end his career.
“I’ll finish my career at Anderlecht, my childhood club. I promised my son, who plays there,” he concluded.
