The pressure was on Paris Saint-Germain as they headed to Austria to take on Red Bull Salzburg. With just one win from their first five games in the revamped ‘League Phase’ of the UEFA Champions League, PSG were in the elimination zone with just three games remaining.
25th out of 36, Les Parisiens desperately needed a win to bolster their chances of progression, especially given that they would next face Manchester City, before concluding their campaign against VfB Stuttgart in late January. The Bundesliga side, in a similar predicament, could also be playing for their future in the tournament come the final round of fixtures.
The 3-0 win for PSG over RB Salzburg on Tuesday is a huge relief, even if it does only lift them to 24th, which represents the final qualification spot for the knockout round. Luis Enrique, however, was not so impressed with his side’s performance.
“To be honest, I thought that we were better against PSV Eindhoven and Atletico Madrid. I thought we were even worse,” began the PSG manager in his post-match press conference. “These are the whims of football, to draw against PSV, to lose against Atletico and then to win here. I need to re-watch the match, but I can say that it wasn’t any better.”
“Better” will be needed to beat Manchester City. Another defeat and it will leave PSG fighting for their survival in the competition against Stuttgart.
