Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente attended the recent Laureus Awards gala, where the Spanish national team was nominated for the Best Team of the Year.

While the evening was about celebrating sporting excellence, De la Fuente also took the opportunity to speak about the current situation surrounding Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Reports suggest that Ancelotti may step down from his position at the end of the season, with former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso being tipped as the likely successor.

While there has been much discussion surrounding this possible change, De la Fuente made it clear that he believes the Italian coach deserves far more respect than he has been receiving.

Standing up for a legendary coach

When asked about the criticism aimed at Ancelotti, De la Fuente expressed his disapproval of the way some voices in football have treated the veteran coach.

“I don’t like gratuitous criticism of anyone, of any professional,” he said.

“I would prefer the professional career of a great coach like Carlo Ancelotti to be treated with respect.

“I think he has nothing to prove, with a track record that many of us would love to have. Always by his side and by the side of all football professionals.”

Looking ahead to the Copa del Rey final

In addition to defending Ancelotti, De la Fuente also commented on the upcoming Copa del Rey final.

Rather than picking a favourite, the national team coach spoke as both a fan and a professional, eager to enjoy the occasion for what it represents.

“Who’s the favourite? The favourite is football itself. We’re going to witness a fantastic spectacle,” he said.

“It’s going to be a great event with high expectations. I’ll enjoy it first as a fan, then as a professional, and I hope all the players come through it without injuries,” he noted.
