England defender Lucy Bronze staggeringly revealed in the aftermath of the Lionesses defending their Euros crown that she’s played through the entire tournament with a fractured tibia.
Bronze, 33, has been one of England’s standout performers at this year’s championships in Switzerland and once again solidified her status as a Lioness great with a sensational display in the final against Spain.
The back-to-back Euros winners defeated Spain in a tense penalty shootout with Chloe Kelly firing home the decisive spot kick to seal another dramatic victory.
And reacting to England’s latest triumph, Bronze revealed the nature of her injury problems going into the tournament.
“I’ve actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia but no one knew,” Bronze disclosed.
“I’ve hurt my knee today on the other leg. I think that’s why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I’ve been in a lot of pain but that’s what it takes to play for England and that’s what I’ll deal with.”
Captain Leah Williamson, who lifted her second successive European Championship trophy, acknowledge the tremendous courage of her team-mates to grind out another victory.
“Total disbelief but at the same time, I knew it was going to happen,” she claimed.
“Playing for this England team is just unbelievable. It’s such an amazing feeling to be a part of this.
“There are always moments where I think, ‘right girls, nows the time, let’s turn it on’.
“But, as soon as the match started, the way we defended, as a back four especially but as a whole team. It just felt like it was going to be our day.”
The Lionesses will now celebrate their incredible triumph with a parade through Central London, as they become the first England team in history to win a tournament on foreign soil.
