Liverpool’s summer transfer window has become a point of contention among fans, and Chat G&G hosts Gags Tandon and Grizz Khan took a deep dive into what could lie ahead. With Arne Slot preparing for his first full season in charge, recruitment will be crucial to shaping Liverpool’s future. The discussion revolved around the lack of squad depth, the areas that need reinforcement, and whether the club will finally break its pattern of cautious investment.
One of the biggest frustrations for the Chat G&G hosts was the squad’s lack of depth, particularly in midfield and defence. Gags was unequivocal: “The squad’s not ready for a four-trophy haul… something’s going to give somewhere.”
Liverpool’s struggles in recent months have highlighted this issue, with Grizz stating: “We just weren’t as energetic as PSG… they’re able to rest players every weekend and still smash every team in their league.”
That luxury is not available in the Premier League, where even the bottom clubs demand full intensity. The concern is that Liverpool’s title challenge might be derailed by fatigue and a lack of rotation options. Gags emphasised the key problem: “We don’t have enough depth to cover a Mac Allister or a Szoboszlai coming off. When Trent went off, it was over.”
Grizz agreed, pinpointing how Liverpool repeatedly suffer from the same late-season drop-off: “How do we fix this? Every season we fall off around this time.”
The right-back situation was a particular source of frustration. Gags noted the risk in not signing cover: “Look at Gomez, Trent and Bradley – all three injury-prone players, and all three got injured.”
Liverpool’s reluctance to strengthen in January was debated at length. Grizz questioned whether it was purely a club decision or if Slot himself played a part: “If he was part of the decision to say ‘no signings in January,’ then he’s to blame too.”

For Gags, this is where Liverpool could have done more: “Another right-back or a hybrid right-back/centre-back could have changed things. Even one extra midfielder with real legs would have made a difference.”
A key topic of discussion was Liverpool’s midfield options, particularly in the absence of a natural defensive midfielder. “If Tchouaméni was in this squad, we’d probably be 24 points clear and still in the Champions League,” Gags claimed.
He further lamented the club’s cautious approach: “In January, if you really wanted to win the Champions League and bring in more money, you had to back the manager with another midfielder.”
Grizz, however, warned against assuming a single signing would have changed Liverpool’s fortunes: “I’m wary of saying ‘if we had one more midfielder, we’d have won the Champions League.’ It’s not that simple.”
What was clear, though, is that Liverpool lack rotation options in key areas. The drop-off in energy levels during extra time against PSG was a stark reminder of this. “We’re built to play 90 minutes, not 120,” Gags admitted.

One of the biggest unknowns remains how Liverpool will approach the summer window. Will they invest in the key areas needed, or will the cautious approach continue?
Grizz pondered whether the club was simply waiting for its main targets: “Maybe it wasn’t possible to get the right player in January… like when we waited for Konaté.”
However, Gags was clear that Liverpool can’t afford to stand still: “Enjoy this run while it lasts, because if two or three big players leave, we might not win the league again for a long time.”
The next few months will define Arne Slot’s reign. Liverpool fans will be hoping that this summer finally sees the club match its ambitions with action in the transfer market.
