Liverpool have officially announced that young striker Jayden Danns will join Sunderland on loan until the end of the season. However, his much-anticipated move comes with an unexpected setback, as an injury means he won’t be linking up with his new teammates at the Stadium of Light straight away.
It appears to be a recurrence of the back injury that sidelined the 19-year-old during pre-season, preventing him from making an immediate impact for Sunderland. The Championship side confirmed that the issue was flagged during Danns’ medical examination, forcing a delay in his involvement.
Liverpool released a statement regarding the situation:
“The striker will complete his rehabilitation on an injury at the AXA Training Centre before linking up with the Championship side for the remainder of 2024-25.”
This development is a frustrating one for Danns, who was already dealing with a stress fracture sustained in August. That injury ruled him out of the early part of the season and likely prevented a loan move during the summer transfer window.
Despite the setback, Danns has already made his mark at Liverpool. Just last Wednesday, he became the youngest player in the club’s history to start a Champions League match, featuring against PSV. It was a proud moment for the talented forward, showcasing his potential on the big stage.
Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, shared his thoughts on securing Danns, acknowledging both his talent and the unfortunate injury delay. Speaking to safc.com, he said:
“Jayden is an extremely talented player, who fits the profile we were searching for. His availability was always going to be determined late in the window due to Liverpool’s schedule and the demand for him was high, so we worked extremely hard to secure the player.”
Speakman also addressed the medical findings, confirming the nature of Danns’ current situation:
“It’s unfortunate that the medical process highlighted an issue that ultimately requires Jayden to take a period of rest. Despite this, he remained highly motivated to come to Sunderland and as such we agreed to collaborate with Liverpool to ensure there is an opportunity for him to join us at a later date.”
“We remain excited by the prospect of working with him and look forward to supporting him throughout the upcoming period.”
Despite the setback, Danns remains focused and grateful for the opportunity at Sunderland. The young forward expressed his enthusiasm and determination:
“This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and I’m grateful to the Club for placing their faith in me. I’ve done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step.”
“I’m disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway, but I’m proud to have joined the Club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part.”
Although fans will have to wait a little longer to see Danns in a Sunderland shirt, his determination and work ethic suggest that he will be ready to contribute as soon as he recovers. Both Liverpool and Sunderland will be monitoring his progress closely, eager for him to make his mark in the Championship.
