Liverpool are well informed on the conditions of a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong is a name on Liverpool’s radar to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season. Alexander-Arnold is set to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Frimpong is expected to leave Leverkusen after four-and-a-half seasons with the German side. The Dutch international has emerged as one of Europe’s most effective wing-backs and was a key part of Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten German double in 2023/24.

The 24-year-old has a release clause of around €35m to €40m in his contract at Leverkusen and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool are well informed. Conor Bradley is regarded highly at Anfield, but the Premier League champions are searching for competition for the Northern Ireland international.

Crucially, Frimpong would also be considered homegrown in Liverpool’s squad allocation. The wing-back came through the academy system at Manchester City but departed for Celtic in 2019 having failed to make a senior appearance.

Why do Liverpool want to sign Jeremie Frimpong?

Frimpong has emerged as one of Europe’s most productive wing-backs during his time in German football. After winning a Scottish treble with Celtic in 2019/20, he joined Leverkusen in January 2021 and has gone from strength to strength.

Across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 Bundesliga campaigns, Frimpong scored 17 league goals and created 14 more, earning back-to-back inclusions in the Team of the Season.

Though his numbers have declined somewhat this season, he has returned nine goal involvements in 24 league starts. He ranks in the top 2% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for non-penalty xG, progressive carries and attacking penalty area touches.

Despite reservations of his suitability to a back four, having operated primarily as a wing-back or winger for Leverkusen, he betters both Alexander-Arnold (46.6%) and Bradley (47%) for tackle success rate (53.6%) this season.
