Liverpool are unlikely to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola this summer with the club keen to avoid blocking the pathway of Rio Ngumoha.
Reports this week have credited Liverpool with interest in Barcola. Journalists Sacha Tavolieri and Fabrizio Romano claimed the Reds were prepared to test PSG’s resolve with a bid.
Barcola scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in Ligue 1 last season. However, he found himself in and out of the team following the signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli in January. A deal for the France international would cost upwards of €100m (£87.3m) and The Athletic have cast doubt on Liverpool launching a move.
Arne Slot is understood to have been hugely impressed by the pre-season performances of 16-year-old Ngumoha and Liverpool do not want to make a signing that could stunt his development.
“Liverpool rate Barcola highly but pursuing someone of his profile would act as a pathway blocker for talented teenager Rio Ngumoha, who has enjoyed an outstanding pre-season for Arne Slot’s side,” The Athletic’s LFC correspondent James Pearce detailed.
“Liverpool don’t want to do anything to impact Ngumoha’s progression.”
Arne Slot’s side remain interested in signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United after an opening bid was rejected.
The Premier League champions are expected to return with a British transfer record bid for the Swedish striker, who has informed Newcastle of his desire to leave St James’ Park. The centre-forward would compete with Hugo Ekitike for the number nine position, allowing Ngumoha to act as understudy to Cody Gakpo on the left-wing.
Liverpool have agreed the sale of Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal for a fee of €53m plus add-ons to raise funds for their pursuit of Isak.
