As a player who arrived in the summer of 2023, the Hungarian captain, Dominik Szoboszlai, was someone who was compared to Kevin De Bruyne. The comparison even saw the former RB Leipzig man heralded as a potential replacement for the Manchester City talisman, before arriving on Merseyside for a fee in the region of £60m.
Despite the urge to compare the Liverpool number eight to more intricate and creative attacking midfielders, the bespoke nature of this encounter meant the man of the match showed every inch of his effectiveness, which is far beyond the limitations of pure creation.
In the build-up to this spectacular performance at White Hart Lane, all the energy and power were clear to see for those who were able to see the positives in his displays. Tonight within this demolition of Spurs, that power and tenacity were of course in full effect, however, the goal-scoring and creative touch was also evident as he ran the Liverpool show in front of an adoring travelling fanbase.
The goal by Alexis Mac Allister was enabled by the drive into the box by Dominik Szoboszlai, as he used his size and physicality to allow the chance to stay alive. His own first-half goal embodied his pace and powerful running, with a fine and intricate finish under the Spurs keeper, Fraser Forster, to ensure a two-goal lead going into the halftime break.
In the second half, the 24-year-old Hungary superstar was on hand to assist his record-breaking teammate, Mohamed Salah, whereas the entirety of this sensational game of football showed all of the qualities that make this powerhouse of a player a perfect example of what Arne Slot is building.
With the firm rotation of the midfield group allowing form to be maintained within this central stable of assets, the middle ground area is now running wonderfully with a perfect blend of skill and the ability to shut opponents down. This game also showed a superb performance for both Mohamed Salah and the Columbian flyer, Luis Díaz, as they tore the Tottenham backline to shreds with their attacking prowess and goal contributions.
Next up Leicester on Boxing Day night, where a load and intimidating Anfield awaits.
