Liverpool manager Arne Slot revealed that Alexis Mac Allister sustained an injury during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The Reds maintained their place on top of the Premier League table thanks to Diogo Jota’s first-half finish at Selhurst Park, although they were fortunate not to give away a penalty in the second half.

The victory was marred by Alisson Becker having to come off with twenty minutes left on the clock with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Slot confirmed afterwards that the Brazilian goalkeeper will be out for “a few weeks”.

It turns out that was not the only injury problem to come out of the game for Liverpool, as the Dutchman explained why he replaced Mac Allister with Dominik Szoboszlai at halftime.

“Mac Allister was a bit of a surprise to me. He came in at half time and said didn’t feel right. So we didn’t take any risks,” he told BBC Match of the Day. “With Alisson it is clear he will be out for a few weeks.”

The Argentine’s injury was not specified and does not seem to be serious, but Slot did question why his side were slated to play the 12.30pm kickoff after playing in Europe in midweek. Liverpool beat Bologna 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday.

“Maybe this is something the FA should look at if you play Wednesday evening why do we have an early kick off in an away game,” he said. “Or they have to look at me and rotate all my players, maybe it is also bad luck.

“The positive thing is that (Vítezslav) Jaros did really well last season when on loan. He was champion and won the cup (with Sturm Graz). He wanted to play desperately. He was outstanding today.”

Slot elaborated more on the decision to take Mac Allister off in his post-match press conference.

“He went off because of an injury,” he confirmed. “How bad it is, that’s difficult for me to judge at this moment.

“He could have continued playing as you saw because it didn’t happen one second before half-time. But he felt it a bit too much and said he doesn’t think it’s too good to keep on playing because you never know, he might make it worse.

“What is the exact situation – can he go to Argentina, can he go and play over there? That’s difficult for me to tell you now. His injury is in the groin area.”
