In what could become the most expensive transfer in both Bundesliga and Premier League history, Florian Wirtz is reportedly closing in on a sensational move to Liverpool. According to BILD, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder is poised to join the reigning English champions on a contract until 2030, with only final negotiations on the transfer fee left to resolve.
Liverpool’s intention is clear—they do not want a protracted saga. After weeks of behind-the-scenes discussions, the Merseyside club has tabled an initial formal offer of £100 million, with a further £10–12 million in performance-related bonuses. That puts the proposed total value between £110–112 million, which is roughly €130.5–133 million.
BILD reports that Bayer Leverkusen are holding firm at €150 million, while Liverpool hope to meet them somewhere closer to €135 million. While still some way apart on paper, the margin is not insurmountable, especially when you factor in negotiation levers like payment structures and performance incentives.
It’s also noted that one sticking point in discussions is the training compensation fee, which is typically five percent of the transfer total, distributed to youth clubs that helped develop the player. In Wirtz’s case, 1. FC Köln could be due around €3 million.

The deal comes just days after Wirtz turned down a move to Bayern Munich, with BILD revealing that the decision was made on May 23. His father and advisor, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, played a pivotal role in guiding the player’s future direction, reportedly favouring a new challenge abroad rather than staying in Germany.
That decision speaks volumes. Bayern, historically dominant in Germany, rarely lose out on domestic targets. But Wirtz, who scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists in the 2024–25 Bundesliga season, appears focused on testing himself in the Premier League under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, fresh from guiding the Reds to the league title.
Wirtz has long been earmarked as one of Europe’s brightest prospects, and this deal—if it goes through—will only confirm his status. A dynamic midfielder with supreme vision, composure on the ball, and an uncanny knack for arriving in the box at the right time, he offers a unique skill set.
Liverpool have perhaps not had a player of this profile since Philippe Coutinho’s departure. Slot’s fluid tactical system, which has reinvigorated Liverpool, could be the perfect canvas for Wirtz to shine.

Liverpool’s swift move for Wirtz also signals their intent to evolve. Rather than settling after a title win, they are looking to sharpen their attack with youthful energy and technical quality—traits Wirtz has in abundance.
Bonus clauses are still under discussion, with the usual mix of likely targets (such as Champions League qualification) and more ambitious milestones (like winning the Champions League). A precedent can be found in Kai Havertz’s 2020 transfer to Chelsea, where Bayer received significant add-ons after the Blues’ Champions League triumph in 2021.
Given how close both clubs are in terms of the financial framework, it’s increasingly likely a deal could be finalised swiftly, making Wirtz the new face of Liverpool’s next generation.
From a fan’s perspective, this news is absolutely electric. Wirtz isn’t just another promising player—he’s a generational talent. The fact that he rejected Bayern Munich to come to Anfield speaks volumes about what Liverpool have built under Arne Slot. After winning the Premier League in his debut season, Slot has shown he’s not here to maintain, he’s here to dominate.
Wirtz’s arrival would be a statement. He’s the kind of player who can unlock deep defences, drift between lines, and create magic from nowhere. With Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, and Wirtz in midfield, Liverpool could be unplayable.
There’s a buzz around this transfer that we haven’t felt since the Virgil van Dijk and Alisson days. If this goes through, the Reds aren’t just buying potential—they’re securing brilliance.
And let’s not forget the optics: beating Bayern to a German starlet, securing him long-term, and doing so in a title-winning summer—this is the kind of move that tells Europe, Liverpool are back, and we’re building for the next era of dominance.
