Liverpool head to Leicester on Sunday with one eye on the Premier League title and the other on who’s fit enough to help get them over the line. Arne Slot’s side sit on the brink of something big, and a win at the King Power Stadium could push them even closer—especially if results elsewhere go their way.
Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t pulled on a Liverpool shirt since that gut-wrenching Champions League exit to PSG on penalties back in March. That night at Anfield saw the right-back limp off with an ankle injury, and he’s missed four games since—three in the Premier League, plus the Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle.
But there’s a flicker of good news. He’s trained this week, tentatively at first, and might be back on the bench against Leicester. Starting? No chance, says Slot.
“Trent is coming back from an injury, he trained with us yesterday and every time he plays with us and trains with us he shows his commitment,” said the manager on Friday.
“He has worked so hard to be back already now… He has worked so hard during the whole season and now during his rehab to be back with the team again.”
Slot was clear—Trent’s still not match sharp.
“[He is] not [ready] to start but if things go well today and tomorrow, he might – might – be on the bench… So it would be nice if Trent is with us during the weekend, yes.”
With Joe Gomez still recovering from hamstring surgery, and Conor Bradley only just back from injury himself, Liverpool will be hoping Alexander-Arnold’s recovery keeps heading in the right direction.
The injury list is starting to ease, but choices remain tight. Joe Gomez is still out, while Darwin Núñez is expected to return after illness ruled him out of the late win over West Ham.
Bradley filled in well at right-back against the Hammers and could start again, but asking him to go the full 90 after a lengthy layoff is a risk. Having Trent on the bench gives Slot a safety net.
On the left, Andy Robertson is likely to come back in for Kostas Tsimikas. Further up the pitch, Dominik Szoboszlai will be hoping for a recall after being benched in favour of Curtis Jones last time out.
If Liverpool beat Leicester and Arsenal slip up at Ipswich earlier on Sunday, the title could be theirs—with five matches to spare. That’s how close this team is to putting their stamp on another Premier League crown.
But nothing’s in the bag yet. Leicester may be down the table, but they won’t roll over at home. And with the pressure of expectation building, Slot knows every decision counts.
