Liverpool’s pre-season friendly defeat to AC Milan may not have delivered the kind of performance Arne Slot will want to bottle up and carry into the new campaign, but it did offer some telling signs about where certain players stand. Among them was 22-year-old Tyler Morton, whose brief first-half cameo and second-half reappearance painted a picture of a footballer at a crossroads.
Substituted after just half an hour before being reintroduced later, Morton’s involvement was sporadic at best. More than a tactical footnote, it felt symbolic. Slot, fresh from delivering Liverpool’s first Premier League title since 2020, has a clear vision for the squad’s future. And for now, it appears Morton may not be part of it.
Post-match, the midfielder delivered his own assessment of the situation. Speaking to The Redmen TV, Morton was candid.
“I’m looking for game time, simple as that really,” he said. “I think last season was tough for game time for myself, so it was a big learning year. I learnt a lot from players, the manager and stuff but now I’m ready, I’m ready to play.”
That readiness stems from more than just frustration. Morton has spent time out on loan, most notably with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, where he clocked up 46 and 41 appearances respectively. But last season back at Liverpool yielded just five appearances in all competitions.
Despite being part of a title-winning squad, he admits the personal satisfaction wasn’t complete.
“I’m a massive Liverpool fan so I loved celebrating with my family, my friends, I couldn’t have asked for a better year except for game time really!” he added. “It was brilliant and I’m just happy for the whole of Liverpool, everyone who comes to every game to watch that team, we were brilliant last season so hopefully we can kick on and do even better this season.”
Under Slot, Liverpool have reshaped their midfield. The presence of established names and rising talents alike makes it difficult to see how Morton can regularly force his way into the side. Even in a pre-season context, his early withdrawal raised eyebrows and hinted that the club may be open to letting him leave.
There has been talk of interest from West Ham United, who are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. With Morton’s technical skillset, balance in possession and eye for a pass, it is easy to imagine him thriving in a system built around his strengths.
Morton’s club career so far reflects the challenge faced by many academy graduates at elite clubs: breaking through is one thing, staying relevant is another. His numbers — 46 games for Blackburn in 2022/23, 41 for Hull in 2023/24 — point to a player with proven durability and growing maturity.
Yet with just five appearances last season and stiff competition under Slot, Morton’s desire to play regularly may only be fulfilled by stepping away from Anfield.
In truth, he would not be the first Liverpool academy product to carve out a successful career elsewhere. If West Ham or another Premier League side take the plunge, the move could prove mutually beneficial. Morton needs minutes, and he’s made it clear he’s no longer content to wait.
