Harvey Elliott may be the face of Liverpool’s future, but his comments this week hint at a player caught between ambition and patience. The 21-year-old, fresh from being crowned UEFA’s Player of the Tournament at the European Under-21 Championship, has admitted he may have to think selfishly when it comes to his next move. According to Metro.

“I kind of need to be selfish with myself and see what’s best for me,” Elliott told The Anfield Wrap while on tour in Hong Kong. “I have big ambitions. I want to go to the World Cup.”
The midfielder has made 31 appearances for the Reds last season, but only six of those were starts. West Ham, sensing an opportunity, have opened talks with Liverpool this month, and while nothing is agreed, there’s a growing sense that Elliott could look for more consistent minutes elsewhere.

“I need to review the situation because we’ve had many new players come in,” Elliott continued. “Whether it blocks the path for me I’m not sure, it’s something I need to decide and have a look at.”
The club have added significant depth under Arne Slot, but that means opportunities could become scarce for players like Elliott, no matter how promising they look on paper or in youth competition.
Elliott is currently part of Liverpool’s travelling squad for pre-season in Asia and remains committed for now. “At the moment I’m here for the season, as far as I’m aware, unless anything changes,” he said.

His future may come down to how much trust the new regime places in him across these early friendlies.
If you are a Liverpool fan, Elliott’s words hit differently. Not with anger, but with understanding. He has grown up at the club, he speaks with the maturity of someone who wants to succeed, not just survive. But the midfield is a crowded space now, and even talent like his has to wait for scraps at times.
There’s no doubt he impressed in the Under-21 Euros. Five goals from midfield, composure beyond his years, and a player who looks ready for more than cameos. You can see why West Ham fancy their chances. He fits their dynamic, attacking style and would be a guaranteed starter most weeks.
But there is something in Elliott’s tone that still sounds like Liverpool is his home. “If I had it my way, I’d be here for the rest of my career,” he said. That’s not a throwaway line, that’s belief in the club, in the badge. It just might need reciprocating.
The club’s hierarchy need to find the right balance here. Letting Elliott go could be one of those decisions they regret. For now, fans will be watching pre-season closely, hoping Slot sees the same spark that England and the rest of Europe just did.
