Liverpool are set to break a transfer record for the second time in this window. The Reds want to make one hell of a statement.

Liverpool are spending money en masse this summer. It's essentially the complete opposite to 2024 where Richard Hughes focused on keeping things as simple as possible.

That was infuriating at the time, obviously. We all sat and watched Liverpool desperately try to sign Martin Zubimendi as the sole addition, failed to do so, and then ignore all alternatives.

It all worked out, though. Liverpool won the Premier League anyway, signed Federico Chiesa instead, and we all got an all-timer of a song.

This time around, though, Liverpool will not be so quiet in the transfer market. Florian Wirtz is the headline signing and is set to arrive from Bayer Leverkusen later this week.

But even outside of that transfer, the Reds are ready to break a transfer record twice.

Liverpool want record full-backs

Liverpool have completed one senior signing already, of course. Jeremie Frimpong has joined from Leverkusen for around £30m.

It's a deal that absolutely shattered the Reds' record for a full-back. Though, that's also a complicated one to judge.

Technically the record was £18.5m on Glen Johnson. That was a strange deal, however, as Liverpool actually only paid £11m - the rest came from allowing a struggling Portsmouth to not pay the final £7m they owed for Peter Crouch.

So Liverpool spent £11m on a £18m deal, essentially, though it was £7m they almost certainly would never have seen. The most they'd actually spent, then, is £12.5m on Nathaniel Clyne.
