Arne Slot is looking to expand his striker options ahead of the Premier League title defence

Liverpool have entered into negotiations for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as they look to refresh their attacking options ahead of next season’s Premier League title defence.

Arne Slot’s side have dominated the news throughout the summer transfer window, making headlines early on with the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and introduction of his replacement in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

And they show no signs of slowing after confirming the potential British-record signing of Florian Wirtz last week, now entering the market for a new centre forward.

According to reports, the club has offered the out-of-favour pair of Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa to Napoli in exchange for Victor Osimhen, who spent last season on loan at Galatasaray.

Osimhen’s Napoli contract reportedly features a £64.2m release clause. Liverpool are ready to sell Nunez for a minimum of £59m this summer, while Chiesa joined from Napoli last year for just £10m.

Napoli, though, want more from Liverpool, with new reports claiming they will demand £17m on top of the two players to complete the deal.

Nunez is yet to find his feet on Merseyside, scoring just five of Liverpool’s 86 Premier League goals last season as they cruised to the title despite making 30 appearances.

Chiesa has been similarly unremarkable since joining from Juventus last summer and could now be set for a prompt return to Serie A.

In theory, the proposed move suits all parties. Nunez and Chiesa are keen to leave Anfield in search of greener pastures, with the Italian especially keen to return to his home country as he chases a return to the national team under Genarro Gattuso.

Napoli, too, are hoping to relieve themselves of Osimhen’s lofty wages, thought to be worth close to £200,000 per week.

With so many parties involved, though, the move will prove complicated and will require lengthy negotiations.

Osimhen, capped 40 times for Nigeria, has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, and came close to joining Chelsea last summer before agreeing his loan to the Turkish Super Lig. Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ahli and Paris Saint-Germain had also held an interest.

He bagged 26 league goals in 30 appearances for the Turkish giants last season, securing goal of the season honours for an acrobatic bicycle kick against Antalyaspor.

Manchester United are also interested in signing Osimhen this summer as Ruben Amorim continues to work on a dramatic squad overhaul.

Liverpool’s other striker targets include Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, though the latter would require a bid in the region of £150m to be pried away from St James’ Park.
