Liverpool have been left "very angry" by Trent Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave and join Real Madrid on a free transfer and are reportedly ready to complicate an early sale to the Spanish side.

Alexander-Arnold has already confirmed he will depart Liverpool when his contract expires this summer on June 30, but Madrid are now looking at bringing his arrival forwards in time for the start of the Club World Cup two weeks earlier.

Doing so would require Madrid to reach an agreement with Liverpool to release him from his contract early - a small fee would likely be sufficient - but COPE state the Reds are not prepared to be particularly accommodating.

Liverpool are said to be "very angry" about the upcoming loss of their star right-back for free and, even though they will not feature in the Club World Cup, are reluctant to help Madrid's chances of winning by agreeing to sell Alexander-Arnold early.

Anfield chiefs have made it clear they want compensation if they are to release Alexander-Arnold. While Madrid are readying an offer, they will still have to meet Liverpool's demands if they want to get a deal done early.

It is thought that Alexander-Arnold wants to play in this summer's Club World Cup but just how much Liverpool will demand to make his dream a reality is unclear. Madrid are hoping to do a deal around the €1m (£850,000) mark.

The new-look summer transfer window will open on June 1 and give teams a ten-day spell to bolster their squads before the Club World Cup. FIFA rules state transfer windows cannot be open for longer than 12 weeks and so, to ensure it closes at the usual time, it will temporarily shut between June 10 and June 16.
