As a 20-year rivalry is reignited at Anfield this afternoon

An afternoon of entertainment is in store at Anfield as a team of Liverpool legends battle their Chelsea counterparts in a high-profile charity match. One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised from the game will support the work of LFC Foundation, as well as supporting beneficiaries – including Forever Reds, Chelsea FC Foundation and Chelsea Players' Trust.

Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch, Ryan Babel, Djibril Cisse and Sami Hyypia are among the headline names in a star-studded Liverpool Legends squad, whilst Chelsea are bringing a Legends squad to Merseyside that features many heroes including Gianfranco Zola, Claude Makelele, William Gallas and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

As a 20-year rivalry is renewed, in the opposing dugouts will be Reds icon Sir Kenny Dalglish and the Blues’ Champions League-winning manager Roberto Di Matteo. Furthermore, history will be made at Anfield this afternoon as Natasha Dowie and Katie Chapman become the first female players to feature in in the annual legends game. 20-year rivalry reignited

Today’s fixture marks the 20th anniversary of an intense rivalry between Liverpool and Chelsea. Back in the 2004/05 season, the two teams met five times across all competitions, including the Champions League semi-final and the League Cup final.

The Reds claimed victory in the former en route to their memorable win over AC Milan on Europe’s biggest stage, whilst the domestic cup success set the Blues on their way to winning their first-ever Premier League title, thus ending a 50-year wait to be crowned champions of England once again.

Zola reveals favourite Chelsea memory vs Liverpool

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has revealed his favourite meeting with Liverpool came in January 1997.

“It’s always been a tough game against them, but I always say that I probably played my most memorable Chelsea game against them,” he said.

“That was in the fourth round of the FA Cup in my first year. We were two goals down but came back to win 4-2, and then we went on to win the FA Cup.

“That, for me, was one of the most fantastic and emotional games I have ever played.”
