Liverpool’s Injury Concerns Cloud Strong Start

Liverpool have opened the defence of their Premier League title with the resilience of champions, yet injury problems are already casting shadows over Arne Slot’s squad. Friday night at Anfield delivered a six-goal spectacle against Bournemouth, with Federico Chiesa stepping into the spotlight as the unlikely match-winner and Joe Gomez marking his long-awaited return from injury.

Chiesa, often overlooked after a muted debut season, rose from the bench to restore Liverpool’s advantage following a two-goal slip. Mohamed Salah then sealed a 4-2 victory, ensuring the Reds’ flawless start to the season continued.

Frimpong’s Hamstring Strain

Slot’s celebrations were tempered by fresh injury concerns. Jeremie Frimpong, a summer arrival from Bayer Leverkusen, saw his Premier League debut cut short by a sore hamstring. With Ryan Gravenberch back in contention after suspension, Slot will hope the additional recovery days before Newcastle away prove timely.

Understandably cautious, the manager explained his decision to withdraw Frimpong.“It wasn’t out of luxury,” Slot explained. “Jeremie Frimpong felt his hamstring at half-time and made a lot of sprints.

“He was doing quite well, but our other full-back, Conor Bradley, is already injured with a hamstring injury, so you don’t to take the risk of losing another full-back.”

Right-Back Options Under Strain

Liverpool’s depth at right-back has been tested severely. Conor Bradley, sidelined with a hamstring issue, remains unavailable, and his absence intensifies the strain on Slot’s options. His injury has already ruled him out against Athletic Club, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, leaving uncertainty around his potential return.

“You could argue, why don’t you play Joe Gomez there, but he only had two sessions in pre-season and could only play half an hour, so we started with Wataru Endo and our left full-back Milos Kerkez.”

Frimpong is being targeted for a comeback on August 25 against Newcastle at St James’ Park, though Bradley’s return date remains unknown.

Newcastle Challenge Looms

With Alexander Isak’s name swirling in transfer speculation, Liverpool’s visit to Newcastle carries extra intrigue. For Slot, the immediate concern is ensuring defensive stability at right-back, where an injury crisis threatens to derail early-season momentum. The Reds have shown their attacking strength, but the battle to keep key players fit may define their next stretch of games.
