Liverpool Braced for Summer of Change as Alexander-Arnold and Nunez Near Exit

Contract Decisions Shaping Liverpool’s New Era

Liverpool stand at a defining crossroads. The club, a tapestry of tradition and modern excellence, now faces the possible departure of one of its most iconic academy graduates. Trent Alexander-Arnold, a symbol of the club’s identity and innovation, is expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season as a free agent. David Ornstein has confirmed, “The expectation is that he will leave for Real Madrid as a free agent at the end of the season.”

While Mohamed Salah has signed a two-year extension and Virgil van Dijk is believed to be close to committing his future, Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure underscores a concerning lapse in planning. As Ornstein noted, “Perhaps some criticism for Liverpool, for FSG on that front, for leaving it late on a younger player who has come through the system here at Anfield.”

Nunez Falling Short of Expectations

Alongside Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Nunez also finds himself on the verge of an Anfield exit. Brought in under Jürgen Klopp with a reputation for chaos and creativity, Nunez has struggled to cement a consistent role under Arne Slot’s system.

His numbers paint a stark picture: five Premier League goals in 25 appearances, ranking only fifth in the squad for goals. His average of 0.4 key passes and 1.2 shots per game places him well down the list of Liverpool’s attacking contributors. Despite being a physical presence and producing important moments – such as the winning assist against PSG and a brace against Brentford – his match rating of 6.52 ranks 17th in the squad. Ornstein’s conclusion is clear: “Darwin Nunez [is] expected to leave as well.”

Rebuild Demands Precision and Boldness

With Arne Slot preparing for his second summer at the helm, the challenge is no longer one of evolution but of full-scale transformation. Little was done last summer in terms of incoming transfers. This window promises activity and intensity.

Ornstein reports that Liverpool are “in the mix for Dean Huijsen at Bournemouth, the centre-half, and Milos Kerkez, the left-back at Bournemouth.” There is also mention of the need for a new forward, with Nunez’s likely exit leaving a notable gap in the front line.

This is no ordinary transfer period. It is a summer where decisions will shape the spine of Liverpool’s future – defensively, creatively, and in attack.

Legacy of Nunez Remains Unwritten

Nunez’s Liverpool career has been defined by extremes. With 40 goals in 138 games, and 13 goals for Uruguay in 35 appearances, his numbers are far from catastrophic. But expectations were stratospheric. His explosive style thrilled fans but too often left results lacking. His flashes of brilliance – not least his contributions in Europe and January’s double against Brentford – showed what might have been.

Whether he departs this summer or stays to fight for his place, his time at Anfield will be remembered for what it promised as much as what it delivered.
