Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly showing shock transfer interest in the services of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to reports.
It is the latest in a long line of reports concerning Manchester City and their intentions over a potential squad rebuild looking ahead to the final two years of Pep Guardiola’s contract at the Etihad Stadium.
There is a belief in various quarters that City transfer bosses could look towards a number of positions within the first-team squad for recruitment, including the central midfield and full-back areas of Guardiola’s roster.
In fact, the right-sided full-back position currently occupied by Rico Lewis and Kyle Walker is attracting a lot of attention from supporters too, particularly given the sharp decline in performance levels showcased by the 34-year-old over the course of this season so far.
As such, that has led Manchester City to be linked with a number of potential targets from across the European market, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. However, the newest name is much closer to home.
According to the information of CaughtOffside, City are interested in signing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, and have already opened talks with the player’s representatives, while it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds.
Unsurprisingly, it is pointed out that the Premier League champions are looking for replacements in the right-back position following the sharp decline in performances of club captain of Kyle Walker this season.
However, City will not be alone in their transfer interest, and the report names Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain as possible suitors, with the player believed to have a preference towards Los Blancos and the picture could become clear in the coming weeks.
It is highly unlikely that Manchester City will be able to reach an agreement with Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool over a deal for the full-back given their intense on-field rivalry for the Premier League title.
Given how much the player has achieved in the English game, there is also likely to be a feeling of wanting a new challenge away from the Premier League from the part of the player, should he even want to depart Liverpool in the first place.
As such that is likely to lead the Premier League champions in the direction of other targets, particularly if Kyle Walker is to leave the club in the next summer market with Sheffield United competing against possible suitors from Saudi Arabia, according to recent reports.
