Liverpool are reportedly considering allowing Darwin Nunez to leave on loan amid an approach from AC Milan.

The Italian side have enquired about the prospect of signing Nunez on an initial loan deal, with an obligation to make the move permanent.

Nunez has struggled for form and favour this season and has started just seven games in the Premier League, scoring twice. Despite moments of quality, the Uruguayan’s time at Anfield has consisted of inconsistent form as he has failed to justify the initial £64m investment.

Slot defended the forward’s form ahead of Liverpool’s draw with Fulham earlier this month.

“For me, he has impact,” said Slot.

“If you only look at goals, he hasn’t scored the amount of goals that he wants to score, or we want a number nine to score, but he does have impact in his work-rate. He’s part of a team that scores a lot of goals and is winning a lot.

“Of course, as a number nine you want to score more goals and that’s definitely what he wants as well. But I’m not only judging Mohamed Salah on his goals and Darwin on his goals – I also judge them on their work-rate and what they bring to the team.

“The fans support him so much that maybe he wants it too much.”

However, Slot has opted for winger Luis Diaz in a central role ahead of Nunez in recent months and Italian outlet AC Milan TMN are claiming the Reds could sanction his exit. Milan have offered an initial loan fee of €5m (£4.2m) with an obligation to make the deal permanent for an additional €45m (£37.3m).

The Rossoneri are seeking additional firepower after a mixed start to the season that leaves them eighth in Serie A. Milan this week sacked Paulo Fonseca with Sérgio Conceição named as his replacement.

Conceição was the manager of Portuguese side Porto when Nunez excelled in the colours of Primeira Liga rivals Benfica. The latter scored 26 goals in 28 games to win the Bola de Prata as Portugal’s top scorer during the 2021/22 season.
