Liverpool have beaten competition from several clubs to land Jeremie Frimpong with the transfer of the Bayer Leverkusen right-back imminent.

Frimpong is set to undergo a medical at Liverpool in the next 48 hours ahead of signing a five-year deal at Anfield. A full agreement has been reached between Liverpool, Frimpong and Bayer Leverkusen, after the Reds informed Leverkusen of their intent to activate the player’s €35m release clause.

The deal is seen as excellent value by Liverpool’s recruitment team with Frimpong the number one target to replace the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, Liverpool’s pursuit of Frimpong began 12 months ago but the right-back was persuaded to remain at Leverkusen for another season. He has emerged as one of the most productive full-backs in Europe in Germany, with several sides expressing interest.

Frimpong is understood to have received ‘serious interest’ from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United over the past 18 months, before deciding on a move to Liverpool.

The long-term project at Liverpool appeals to Frimpong, who has no reservations about operating in an orthodox right-back role at Anfield.

Though he has featured primarily as a wing-back at Leverkusen, the 24-year-old views himself as a defender first with attacking qualities and is ‘committed to improving his defensive game’.

He will compete with Conor Bradley for a place in Arne Slot’s side, after Bradley signed a new long-term deal this week.
