It took just 14 minutes for Liverpool's more recognised starting 11 to pick up where their teammates left off, with Mohamed Salah opening the scoring with yet another Anfield goal.

Hugo Ekitike did the bulk of the work, though, driving at his marker down the left before cutting the ball back for the Egyptian, who took a touch before coolly finishing past Unai Simón at the near post.

Oihan Sancet levelled things up just before the half hour mark, smashing home after the Reds failed to deal with a free-kick into the box.

After the break, it was the Cody Gakpo show at both ends. The Dutch forward poked home from close range in the 55th minute after Unai Simón could only palm Ryan Gravenberch's effort into his path.

It started a wild 15 minutes, as he then headed in Mikel Jauregizar's cross to draw Athletic level for a second time, before redeeming himself with the winner in the 70th minute, which Simón will have been disappointed to see squirm through his arms.

Scorers: Nguhoma 2', Darwin 5', Doak 43', Elliot 58'; Guruzeta 76'

It took the Reds all of two minutes to take the lead as Rio Nghuma netted his second in as many games.

Darwin Nunez, on what could potentially be his final game at Anfield, then nabbed a second with just five minutes on the clock.

Having been shell-shocked in the opening few minutes Athletic slowly got some momentum in the game but that was lost just before half time as Ben Doak added a third, firing in from a tight angle.

Into the second half and Liverpool got their fourth of the afternoon on the hour mark as Harvey Elliot got in on the act with a composed strike.

The Spanish side did manage to pull one goal back late on through Gorka Guruzeta.

The Premier League champions will take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace on Sunday in the Community Shield at Wembley as the new season gets underway with the traditonal curtain raiser.
