It has been close to four years since Lionel Messi bid a tearful goodbye to FC Barcelona in what was one of the biggest shocks in football history.
Currently plying his trade at Inter Miami, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has constantly been linked with a return to the club of his heart ever since his departure in 2021.
While things had gone quiet on that front, recent reports claimed that Messi was keen on a comeback to Barcelona. The news was broken by the same journalist who first reported his move to the MLS, sparking a lot of speculation.
However, the rumours were shot down soon after, as it was reported that the record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s return would not materialise as long as Joan Laporta was still at Barcelona.
Messi’s current contract with Inter Miami expires on December 31, 2025, and as such his future beyond that remains unclear.

Addressing the matter in a recent interview, the 37-year-old global icon did not give anything away and just insisted that he was happy and enjoying this stage of his career.
“My future? I feel good now and I’m just enjoying every moment of my career,” said Messi, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
“I’m enjoying club, games, teammates, family, friends… I’m not anticipating things. I’m just loving and enjoying the moment.”
Barcelona fans would be delighted to see Messi move back to the club for one last dance, especially with the return to the new Spotify Camp Nou just around the corner.
However, only time will tell whether or not it is something that the former Barça captain is considering at this stage of his career.
