Celtic defender Liam Scales has been named the PFA Ireland Men’s Irish Overseas Player of the Year. The former Shamrock Rovers centre half was a revelation last season under Brendan Rodgers going from a peripheral figure to a first team regular.

A successful spell on loan with Aberdeen appeared to set the Irishman up for a permanent deal at Pittodrie. However, injuries opened the door for a first team slot for the player and he seized it with both hands, becoming a regular in the Ireland set up, too.

Scales has been a regular feature in the Celtic team this season due to his performances as well as injuries to Carter-Vickers. However, Auston Trusty’s £6m arrival from Sheffield Utd has resulted in the American duo starting as the preferred pairing under Rodgers.

A new contract emphasised Scales’ place in the team and he is always a consistent presence when called upon by the manager.
