Levi Colwill played 41 games for Chelsea last season and was ever-present at centre-back during what was a very successful first season for Enzo Maresca and the club.
Speaking during the Club World Cup, Colwill said that a very strong culture is building at the club but the standard is to win and nothing less is accepted.
“We all know how big this club is and how the culture of the club has always been to win. We’re just trying to reinforce that to the young boys, to the boys coming in, that this club is for winners only. That’s what we all need to do and strive towards. That’s what we want to do together.
“Anyone that comes to Chelsea knows the history of the club. They know they are coming here to only win. We’ve got a great team and everyone’s on the same wavelength to try and win.”
Chelsea are in the quarter-finals of the competition and play Palmeiras on Friday, but after the tournament the Englishman says he is looking forward to a well-earned rest: “Playing for such a long time, it takes a lot out of you. At the same time saying that, we know this is a huge tournament and to go as far as possible would be amazing.
“We’re not really thinking about holiday at this moment because we want to try and win the tournament at the end of the day.”
The calendar and start date of the Premier League means that if Chelsea’s players are to get three weeks off, which Maresca has said they will, the end of their holidays will leave very little time to train before the league season starts.
And Colwill insisted that even on holiday he will be keeping fit: “I probably won’t do anything for about a week, maybe two weeks. See how I’m feeling. Then after that, you’ve got to start getting ready for pre-season. It comes around quick. You don’t want to be lacking when it comes to that because the gaffer will get onto you.”
Next season will be a hugely important one for a lot of international players, with the World Cup falling at the end of it, and the 22-year-old revealed his own national team ambitions as well as the importance of playing in the Champions League.
“Of course it is going to be a huge season for me at Chelsea. We’ve back in the Champions League too which we plan to do as well as possible. Then we’ve got the Premier League where we want to push on and do better than we did this season.
“For me, looking at the end of the season where we’ve got the World Cup, it will be a big aim to be there. Of course, I’ve got to play the best I can for Chelsea to try and get myself in that team, in that squad. First and foremost, we’ve got to try and hit our goals for next season.”
Despite a brilliant season for the Blues, Colwill seems to be his own harshest critic and said there is a lot he believes he still needs to improve in his game: “I know I am nowhere near where I would like to be in the future. There are so many areas of my game that aren’t good enough. I think I’ve seen that this season.
“Of course, defending one v one has been tough this season but I think I’ve proved that I’m getting a bit better towards the end. And just on the ball, I’m good at times when I’m trying to make passes and there are other times where I’ve been a bit lazy and you can tell. Like I said, there are so many things I need to improve and get better at, to finalise my game and make myself better to help my team.
“You’ve got to be hard on yourself. I’ve got the right people around me that push me and keep me grounded to be the best version of myself.”
Chelsea face Palmeiras on Friday and Colwill will be hoping for a top performance to help guide the English side to the semi-final where they would face either Fluminense or Al Hilal.
