Crystal Palace put an offer to quadruple Yeremy Pino’s wages at Villarreal to the winger and it was too irresistible to turn down.
Eberechi Eze’s £60m sale to Arsenal generated funds but also created a vacancy that needed to be filled by the Eagles before the window closes.
Palace, who have been recruiting smartly through the years with the likes of Eze and Michael Olise, identified Pino as a possible target that fitted the existing policy of recruiting young players with a high ceiling.
Pino was thought to have no interest in leaving the Yellow Submarine as late as last week, with the Spanish outfit partaking in the Champions League.
Another target, Bilal El Khannouss is ‘seduced’ by the project at Crystal Palace, but the move is ‘on hold’ after negotiations hit a roadblock.
The Eagles, who are not a club to be rushed into making panic signings, returned to Pino with improved wages and a huge commission to his camp.
This increased offer proved to be too good to turn down and managed to turn Pino’s head.
It has now emerged that the offer that turned out to be irresistible was one that was four times his wages at Villarreal, according to Spanish radio station Cadena SER.
Further, though Villarreal offered a new contract with a higher salary, Pino had already set his mind on a move to the Premier League.
The Canary Islander is expected to cost Crystal Palace €30m plus add-ons, with a ‘verbal agreement in principle’ with Villarreal in place.
Pino is a full Spanish international and came through the ranks at Villarreal.
