Mike Penders will join Strasbourg’s pre-season training camp on Monday, and is expected to be the number one according to reports.

Penders agreed a loan move to the Ligue 1 outfit earlier this month, with Chelsea deciding it was the next best step for his development.

The Blues are said to have high hopes for the teenager, who they signed from Belgian side Genk for €20m last summer.

Penders to join Strasbourg training camp on Monday

Chelsea are reportedly against loaning Penders out for three consecutive seasons, as they want to avoid a repeat of what happened with Thibaut Courtois.

Penders remained in Belgium last season, but was part of the squad for the Club World Cup, although he didn’t feature in the competition.

Chelsea believe Penders is “special”, and it seems they view him as their long term number one, whilst the move to Strasbourg will allow the Blues to keep a close eye on his progress.

Playing for Strasbourg will allow Penders to not only gain experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues, but also play European football as Liam Rosenoir’s side qualified for the Conference League last season.

L’Equipe have have reported Penders is expected to join up with Strasbourg’s training camp on Monday, and he’s set to be the number one ahead of Kalle Johnsson.

Chelsea unlikely to sign a new goalkeeper

With Penders joining Strasbourg, and Djordje Petrovic being sold to Bournemouth the question remains as to whether Chelsea will sign a new goalkeeper.

The Blues had the opportunity to sign Mike Maignan earlier this summer, but refused to meet AC Milan’s valuation.

Links with other keepers have been few and far between, and it appears at this stage Robert Sanchez will start the season as number one.

Sanchez isn’t the most popular figure amongst supporters, but if he can perform how he did in the Club World Cup final throughout the season he will win fans over quickly.
