It has been reported that Premier League side Brentford have seen a £35m deal to sign the 18-year-old rejected by Leeds, despite Gray being granted permission to undergo a medical with the Bees.

But just as Leeds fans breathed their sighs of relief, they are once again left holding their breath, as Spurs appear to have sprung into action as they look to secure the England youth international's highly-coveted signature.

Spurs make their move for Gray

According to highly-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are making progress over a deal for Leeds' bright young star, with negotiations beginning to advance.

Romano states that Tottenham are hopeful that personal terms will be agreed, after holding positive discussions with Gray's representatives.

He also reveals that the versatile midfielder - who was forced to predominantly play as a right-back last season - is open to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Romano concludes his report via his X account by stating that Spurs hope to reach a complete agreement with Gray and Leeds in the not so distant future, and that appears to be sooner than some may have expected.

That is because Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has revealed that Gray completed the first part of his Tottenham medical last night (30 June), and that the two clubs have entered the stage of tying up the last few loose ends.

Thomas states that it is fully expected that Gray will now become a Spurs player imminently, as the youngster looks set to take his talents to the Premier League.

Gray will be a huge, but expected loss to Leeds

Producing exceptional young talent is always a double-edged sword. Fans get to witness the pleasure of seeing a young player take the first steps of their career wearing the crest of their club, but also have to endure the inevitable heartbreak when a top club comes calling.

In the case of Gray and Leeds United, this summer always had the feeling of being the end of the road for his time at Elland Road, not helped by the pressure on the club to cash in on multiple star players in order to comply with football's financial laws.

But keeping hold of one of the finest young talents in English football as a Championship club is almost impossible in the modern game, with eye-watering transfer fees simply too good to turn down.

Gray's departure will leave a fairly irreplaceable hole in Daniel Farke's squad, as aside from his future star talent levels, his versatility of being able to play both in central midfield and at right-back, will be as equally big of a miss for the Whites.

Retaining his services was always a more wishful dream than the expectation for Leeds following their play-off final defeat, but Whites fans shouldn't cry that it's over, instead, be happy that it happened.

It can be expected that sell-on clauses and other such future sweeteners will likely be involved in the deal too, in a move that should be seen as one that suits both parties.
