Charlie Cresswell's proposed move from Leeds United to Toulouse appears to have fallen through.

That's according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, who has been providing an update on the future of the centre back.

It was reported over the weekend that the French club were closing in on a deal to sign the 21-year-old from the Elland Road club.

Toulouse had apparently been set to pay somewhere in the region of £3.8million for the signing of Cresswell.

Now however, it appears as though the move will not be happening, despite that agreement being reached between the two clubs.

Charlie Cresswell's Leeds United exit falls through

As per this latest update, the deal that had been set to take the centre back to the French club is no longer going ahead.

It is suggested that the collapse of the deal has happened after Cresswell had travelled to France in order to complete the move, rather than due to negotiations between Leeds and Toulouse.

Indeed, it is thought that the collapse is due to an issue between the player and the Ligue 1 side, with journalist Adam Pope indicating that the two parties could not agree personal terms.

Consequently, the centre back is now set to remain on the books at Elland Road for the time being.

There are still three years remaining on Cresswell's contract with Leeds, securing his future in Yorkshire until the end of the 2026/27 season.

As a result, the Whites will be in a strong position to respond to any offers that come in for the centre back over the rest of the summer transfer window.

Having come through the youth ranks at Leeds, the defender has yet to really establish himself in the starting lineup at Elland Road.

After a spell on loan with Millwall in the 2022/23 campaign, Cresswell returned to his parent club for last season, but found game time hard to come by with Daniel Farke's side.

Leeds of course, finished last season third in the regular Championship season, only to miss out on an immediate promotion back to the Premier League, after defeat to Southampton in the play-off final.

The Whites are so far yet to make any senior signings of their own in the summer transfer window.

No surprise if defender still leaves Elland Road this summer

Even though this move from Leeds to Toulouse has fallen through, it would still not be a huge shock if Cresswell does move on before the market closes.

It does seem clear that the club are willing to let him go this summer, given they had agreed to this deal, and it has been suggested that there is interest from elsewhere as well.

However, you wonder if the fact that Leeds know they could have got the sort of fee they could have from Toulouse, will affect the approach of other potential suitors to a deal for Cresswell.

It does also feel as though the centre back needs to move on this summer to get the game time he needs to further his career, having played so little at Leeds in the 2023/24 campaign.

With that in mind, it is perhaps slightly surprising that he has elected to turn down this move to Toulouse, especially considering it would have allowed him to play top-flight football this season.

All of that means it will be interesting to see how things play out for Cresswell this summer, with regards to what other interest there is in him, how much Leeds want for him, and what move he is willing to accept.
