Why Must Lazio Trim Their Squad

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Maurizio Sarri can only register 17 outfield players in his senior squad, and he currently has 19 at his disposal. Therefore, the Biancocelesti must cut down at least another two players. The club is currently prevented from making new signings due to a transfer ban, by they can still offload players.

Toma Basic & Matteo Cancellieri Could Be Sold

The Roman newspaper identifies Toma Basic as an obvious candidate to leave, as he’s been on the fringe of the technical project for several years now. Moreover, Cancellieri could be heading to the exit door once more, after spending the previous two campaigns on loan at Empoli and Parma.

The winger will be looking to convince Sarri and climb his way up the pecking order, but the manager already has four other wingers at his disposal (Zaccagni, Isaksen, Pedro and Noslin), so it won’t be an easy task.

Olympiacos Interested in Cancellieri

Moreover, Greek portal To10 (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) claims that Cancellieri is now a target of Olympiacos who are interested in his services. The Athens-based giants are considering launching an onslaught for the 23-year-old winger, one year after signing his compatriot, Lorenzo Pirola.

The Alternative Plan for Lazio

However, if Cancellieri were to succeed in his mission to break into Sarri’s plans, the manager could then decide to drop a player in defence, potentially a full-back, as Lazio have five senior players (Tavares, Pellegrini, Lazzari, Hysaj and Marusic) vying for two roles. If the club fails to offload two players in the summer, Sarri would have to exclude someone from his Serie A squad.
