Lazio are reportedly monitoring RB Leipzig midfielder Eljif Elmas who could be keen to return to Serie A amidst his Bundesliga woes.
The North Macedonian made a name for himself in Italy after spending several years at Napoli. He signed for the Partenopei in 2019 and was part of the squad that won the Scudetto title under Luciano Spalletti’s tutelage in 2022/23. While he wasn’t a regular starter, the 25-year-old was considered an important element in the squad due to his versatility and knack for scoring important goals.
Elmas sealed a €24-million transfer to Leipzig in January 2024, escaping what was a chaotic campaign at the Stadio Maradona. However, the attacking midfielder is currently enduring a torrid season in Germany. He has only made six appearances across all competitions and none as a starter.
So according to TuttoMercatoWeb, Lazio are keeping tabs on the North Macedonia international who could be seeking an exit in January in order to revive his playing career, and the Biancocelesti could offer him the opportunity to play his football in the Italian peninsula once more. The source believes the Aquile’s interest could spark negotiations in the coming weeks if the right circumstances ensue.
However, it should be noted that Lazio’s senior squad is already congested, so they would have to ditch one of the current names on the list to make room for any new signing over the age of 22, which explains why the club prefers to sign a young profile. Empoli’s Jacopo Fazzini remains the hottest name on Angelo Fabiani’s shortlist.
