Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto picked up an injury while playing for Italy under-21s in an international friendly against the Netherlands.
The news will come as a big blow to Daniel Farke, who needs as many fully fit players as possible in the closing stages of the season.
The Whites are aiming for automatic promotion in their second attempt, and losing Gnonto through injury would frustrate the manager.
Gnonto came on as a substitute against Queen Park Rangers and produced a virtuoso performance as Leeds secured a 2-2 draw at Loftus Road.
The Italian winger hasn’t started in as many games as he would have liked, with Farke preferring Manor Solomon, Dan James and Brenden Aaronson in his preferred positions.
The international break would have given him the chance to enhance his playing time, but now he has picked up an injury that could rule him out for a while.
Every manager wants his players to return to the club without picking up an injury while on international duty. This can become very frustrating, especially when a player gets injured at the business end of the season.
The Italy national team’s X handle claimed that the Whites forward has picked up an ankle injury.
BBC Sports journalist Adam Pope shared that Gnonto may have picked up an “unfortunate” muscular injury which needs to be checked over.
He wrote on X: “Re Gnonto we will have to wait and see. One contact in Italy says it was an unfortunate injury, needs to be checked over but it could be a muscular problem. Know more I guess when it settles down.”
The race for promotion is very tight at the top. At 38 games, both Leeds and Sheffield United are tied at 80 points, and only goal difference separates the two sides.
Burnley are also in the race, just two points behind the top two. This means Leeds cannot afford to slip up; they must use their experience from the previous season and get the job done. They have dropped many points recently and need to pick up momentum.
The extent of Gnonto’s injury is unclear. However, if it is a muscular injury, as Pope suggests, it should the Whites’ fans have every reason to get worried.
