Last-minute Addicks do it again

Some things don’t change, even when you move up a division. Charlton Athletic, the masters of late goals, have already opened their Championship account in the most Charlton way possible.

Since the start of the 2024/25 season, the Addicks have bagged 11 league goals after the 90th minute - more than any other club across England’s top four tiers.

Ten of those came in last year’s promotion charge from League One. Goal number eleven arrived on Saturday in their first game back in the second tier, a dramatic 1-0 win over Watford at The Valley.

It looked destined for a draw until the fourth minute of stoppage time. Conor Coventry swung in a deep corner from the right, Lloyd Jones nodded it back across goal, and Harvey Knibbs was in the perfect spot to smash home a volley from point-blank range.

Boss Nathan Jones couldn’t have scripted it better: “Then to score in the manner that we did is a wonderful way to win a game.”

Leeds (10), Bournemouth (9), and Wycombe, Crewe, and Swindon (all 8) trail Charlton in the late-goal stakes. But for now, the Addicks are top of the table when it comes to last-gasp drama and opponents have been warned: don’t switch off when the clock hits ninety.
