MD36 of the 2023-24 La Liga season continued on Wednesday with four crucial matches, with matters involving Champions League qualification and relegation at stake. Atletico Madrid made the short trip to Getafe, while Sevilla took on Cadiz, Athletic Club travelled to Celta Vigo, and Rayo Vallecano faced Granada at Vallecas.

Antoine Griezmann was the star of the show as Atletico Madrid secured Champions League football for next season in style. The French magician scored all three goals against Getafe at the Coliseum: two in the first half, one in the second.

Sevilla 0-1 Cadiz

A huge result in the relegation dogfight, as Cadiz struck very late to defeat Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. The visitors had a Chris Ramos goal controversially ruled out by VAR, but it mattered little in the end of Sergi Guardiola struck in the 96th minute to secure a massive three points.

Celta Vigo 2-1 Athletic Club

Celta responded to Cadiz’s victory in the perfect manner, as they secured a sensational comeback victory over Athletic Club. Alex Berenguer scored the opener, but the hosts came roaring back in the second half, inspired by substitute Hugo Alvarez – he laid on Williot Swedberg for the equaliser, before scoring the winner himself.

Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Granada

Despite having Oscar Trejo sent off after four minutes, Rayo Vallecano secured victory over Granada to all-but secure their place in La Liga for next season. Florian Lejeune and Jorge de Frutos with the goals for the home side, which meant that Lucas Boye’s late effort meant very little.
