La Liga has not granted Real Madrid’s request to postpone their opening fixture of the 2025/26 against Osasuna, scheduled for Tuesday, 19 August, reports Carrusel.

Real Madrid, currently competing in the FIFA Club World Cup and set to face PSG in the semi-finals tonight, argued that the calendar does not provide the required rest period between seasons.

The regulations stipulate a minimum of three weeks’ rest and three weeks of pre-season for players.

On that basis, the Spanish capital club requested a rescheduling of the match to October 29, a proposal supported by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and Osasuna.

La Liga, however, maintains that the 2024/25 season for Real Madrid officially concluded in June with the final matchday of the league, and that it is the Club World Cup that has disrupted the calendar.

Furthermore, La Liga points out that it has already taken Real Madrid’s situation into account by scheduling the fixture for Tuesday 19 August, despite the matchday being originally set to end on Monday.

As such, the league insists that it does not see any reason for any further postponement of the fixture.

However, it is important to note that the Competition Committee’s Sole Judge is responsible for ruling on whether the match should be postponed.

If the request is approved, La Liga, as the body in charge of scheduling, would propose the new date and time for the match.

It should be noted that the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) has voiced its support for Real Madrid’s request to move the game, keeping in mind the players’ welfare. With RFEF and Osasuna also not opposed to the idea, La Liga continues to stand in the way.
