According to Opta, Kylian Mbappé (25) broke an unwanted record for Real Madrid in El Classico against Barcelona. The France captain was penalised for offside eight times in the match where Los Mergenues were humbled by their arch-rivals in a 4-0 defeat.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward believed he had opened the scoring in the match but his celebrations were soon brought to a premature end after the video referee adjudged the 25-year-old to be offside. This trend would continue with Mbappé adjudged to be offside a further 6 times before he thought he had scored once again, only for the flag to go up once again.

The record for 8 offsides is the most for more than eight years in Europe’s top five domestic divisions, L’Équipe reports. Karim Benzema was the last player to be penalised for the infringement 7 times in 2018, also whilst playing for Real Madrid against Eibar. A torrid night for the Champions League winners was typified by another difficult night for their attacker.
