Last night was a special night for Juraj Kucka as he met his old club AC Milan again, and he has admitted to being left touched by the reception from the fans.

Other than all of the talk about Nino Marcelli and a bid being rejected (and then him scoring late on), one of the sub-plots to last night’s game concerned Kucka who relished the chance to have a reunion with his former side.

The midfielder joined Milan for just a few million euros from Genoa back in 2015, and yet he quickly established himself as a fan favourite. His heart and desire on the field – plus the fact he is a self-declared supporter of the club – meant that he was always going to get a good reaction last night.

Indeed that is how it proved to be, as the Curva Sud and the other travelling fans applauded Kuco when he came over at full-time, singing his name as he thanked them.

Kucka spoke to SportMediaset moments after he left the field to reflect not just on the drama of the game in the Slovakian capital but also the reaction he got. MilanNews published his words.

You almost got a result in the end…

“We believed in it. Afterwards we made some mistakes where Milan scored: that’s how it went, we fought until the last minute and we gave it our all. We wanted a positive result for us too, we didn’t manage it but we’re moving forward.”

What did you think of Leao, after your praise before the game?

“I said he’s a great player: even the assist he received was beautiful. We made a lot of positioning errors though.”

Are Milan vulnerable in the defence phase?

“That’s normal, it happens. In my opinion they had the game under control for the entire 90 minutes. Our quality is not at their level and that’s why we started with the idea of defending well, staying close and compact, not opening up spaces. We did that quite well and we have players up front who can make the difference: that’s how we played.”

The Milan fans cheered for you and even chanted your name at the end…

“I didn’t expect it, I was too surprised and happy: I felt the affection they gave me and it was beautiful.”
