After missing out on the play-off places in League One, Huddersfield Town are facing a crucial summer.

Huddersfield are currently without a manager after surprisingly parting company with Michael Duff last month, despite sitting just one point outside the play-offs at the time of his departure.

Terriers owner Kevin Nagle opted against bringing in a permanent replacement for Duff, instead sticking with caretaker manager Jon Worthington until the end of the season, but that decision has backfired spectacularly.

Worthington has won two and lost seven of his nine games in charge of Town so far, with his side losing each of their last five matches, and they are now 10th in the table and a huge 11 points from the top six with just one game of the season remaining.

Duff was not the only key figure to pay the price for Huddersfield's underwhelming season, with sporting director Mark Cartwright also being dismissed from his role earlier this month, meaning that Nagle will potentially have to make two crucial appointments this summer.

When asked which issue the club need to fix as a priority this summer, FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit Graeme Rayner urged Nagle to have both a sporting director and a manager in place by the end of May in order to give the club time to recruit properly ahead of next season.

"There are many issues at our club, but I think the one issue in particular we need to fix as a priority is to decide whether we're going to continue having a director of football or sporting director model or appoint a manager who is going to have more of a hands-on approach when it comes to recruitment," Graeme said.

"We need to make that decision and then get that person in straight away.

"I would like us to announce a director of football and a new manager by the end of May to then give us three full months until the end of the transfer window to get the recruitment right because all roads lead back to recruitment as being a fundamental problem that we've had.

"If we're going to continue with a sporting director, let's get them in now and get them announced, why are we waiting?

"Then let's get the manager or head coach announced and start doing the process of recruitment.

"We also need to make decisions about which players might get a contract and which might not.

"There are seven players out of contract, but who is going to be making those decisions if we don't have people in post?

"I think that's become time-critical, and I hope it's something that is sorted very, very soon."

Kevin Nagle must end Huddersfield Town manager uncertainty quickly

Nagle's decision to stick with Worthington until the summer may have gone disastrously wrong, but he has at least bought himself time to consider his next appointment, and supporters will rightly expect an announcement swiftly after the conclusion of the season.

Paul Warne and Brian Barry-Murphy were both said to be under consideration by Huddersfield earlier this month, but the former has now taken charge of MK Dons and the latter is currently a coach at Leicester City, so Nagle will need to have alternatives in mind.

Nagle is searching for his fifth permanent manager in just under two years since completing his takeover of the Terriers, and with another big decision to make over the next sporting director, the American businessman will be under serious scrutiny over the coming weeks.
