Federico Chiesa was handed a very harsh reality before his transfer to Liverpool. That’s according to a director at Juventus.
Fabrizio Romano has shared some quotes from Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli on Federico Chiesa. Chiesa, of course, left Juventus late in the transfer window to join Liverpool at a cut-price fee.
And it appears that sale was simply inevitable as Juventus were incredibly clear - and harsh, really - in their assessment of Chiesa. They told the player that he simply wasn't a part of their plans.
“We have been clear with Federico Chiesa, he was no longer part of our project,” said Giuntoli.
“We found the best solution possible for all parties and I wish him all the best at Liverpool."
It was reported elsewhere that Chiesa was surplus to requirements at Juventus. New manager Thiago Motta didn't appear to have room for him - and that certainly appeared to be the case as the winger didn't feature at all in pre-season.
But it appears they were very upfront with Chiesa, despite the fact that he was their second-top scorer last season. In fact, the data tells us that Chiesa was the most dangerous player in their squad, involved in creating 4.79 shots per 90 minutes.
Making things happen like that is a real skill of Chiesa's - and one Liverpool will benefit from.
Liverpool really might have picked up the steal of the summer with Chiesa. They paid £10m upfront and that raises to around £12.5m if clauses are met (per the BBC).
It's an extraordinary price for a player who was valued at close to £100m just a couple of years ago. Juventus were remarkably stubborn in their assessment of him, however, dropping their asking price in order for a sale to happen.
But if Chiesa turns out to be as good as we think he'll be, it's a decision they'll massively come to regret.
