Liverpool’s discussions with Mohamed Salah over a new contract are reportedly at a precarious stage, leaving fans and club insiders alike anxious. With Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all nearing the end of their current deals, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Two of the game’s respected journalists, Paul Joyce and Florian Plettenberg, have revealed the uneasy reality surrounding Salah’s future, with Plettenberg highlighting a “huge chasm” between Salah’s demands and what Liverpool is prepared to offer.
Plettenberg noted on social media that “Liverpool and Mohamed Salah’s management are still in talks about a potential new contract beyond 2025.” He added, however, that “no agreement has been reached yet, as both parties remain far apart.” This gap raises the unsettling prospect of Salah, one of Liverpool’s most prized assets, leaving the club as a free agent and potentially joining a European rival.
Adding to the urgency is the interest Salah has attracted from major clubs both in Europe and Saudi Arabia. Plettenberg’s report underscored that Salah’s allure is not limited to the Saudi Pro League; several elite European teams are watching closely, potentially poised to extend lucrative offers. The Athletic’s James Pearce echoed this sentiment, remarking that while Saudi Arabia could provide a financial powerhouse offer, Salah “has shown no indication” he is ready to step away from top-tier European competition just yet. Pearce observed that “if money is the overriding factor then surely the Saudi Pro League awaits,” while adding that Salah’s desire to play at the highest level may keep him in Europe.
Beyond financial considerations, Salah’s attachment to Liverpool and the broader Merseyside community appears strong. James Pearce reported that Salah’s family remains “happy and settled in Cheshire,” an aspect that could play a vital role in his decision-making. With his 33rd birthday approaching next June, Salah will soon have to balance his personal goals, family stability, and professional aspirations.
This attachment raises questions about what he values most at this career stage. While the substantial pay checks from Saudi Arabia are tempting, Salah has made it clear through his performances that he remains committed to elite competition, a sentiment echoed in reports suggesting he is reluctant to turn his back on Europe’s biggest stages.

From Liverpool’s perspective, losing a player of Salah’s calibre without a transfer fee would be a significant setback, particularly as they strive to maintain a competitive squad under Arne Slot’s management. Salah’s contributions extend beyond goals; his experience and consistency provide a backbone to the Liverpool frontline. Should he depart, the Reds would face the monumental task of not only replacing his on-field impact but also securing a leader in the dressing room.
The urgency to find common ground with Salah is mirrored in Liverpool’s proactive efforts to negotiate renewals for Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk, whose contracts also expire soon. Yet, according to Plettenberg, “Liverpool are not close to forging an agreement with Salah,” which underscores the complexities the club is navigating in managing their star roster within budgetary constraints.
Liverpool’s contract challenges don’t end with Salah, van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold. Reports indicate that the club is also considering a strategic reshuffle in other areas, with potential moves for both incoming and outgoing players. Football Insider suggests that Liverpool may even be open to selling Wataru Endo in January, should a more suitable midfield replacement become available. This approach highlights the careful balancing act Liverpool must maintain as they reinforce their roster while managing their financial commitments to existing players.
With Salah’s situation yet to be resolved, Liverpool will have to navigate a fine line between retaining their prized players and refreshing their squad to remain competitive in the Premier League and Europe.
For Liverpool fans, Salah’s contract impasse feels like déjà vu. In recent memory, we’ve seen other beloved players wrestle with contracts and, ultimately, departures. But with Salah, it feels different; he’s been a central figure in Liverpool’s rise to glory in the past decade, etching his name into club folklore with his skill, consistency, and devotion. Letting him walk out without a fee—and potentially to a European rival—is nothing short of heart-breaking for fans.
Fans will feel hopeful that Salah’s love for the club and city, as well as his competitive drive, might tip the scales in Liverpool’s favour. Yet, the looming offers from both Europe and Saudi Arabia cast a long shadow. Supporters hope that the club will bridge the financial gap, even if it means a slight stretch in resources. From a fan’s perspective, the idea of Salah continuing his journey with Liverpool, inspiring the next generation, and competing for the Premier League title under Slot, feels like the best outcome. However, if he does choose to move on, Liverpool will be hard-pressed to replace the irreplaceable.
