In an interview with Suddeutsche Zeitung, Joshua Kimmich shared his thoughts in the aftermath of extending his contract with Bayern Munich.
“I really feel a lot of trust. Vincent Kompany told me in our first conversation that he sees me as a central player in defensive midfield.
“If you’re the best you’ll play there,’ he said. Of course, I had to prove his trust with my performances,” Kimmich explained.
The midfielder said head coach Kompany didn’t try to sway him into staying one way or another.
“We talked about my situation once, but it wasn’t like he wanted to influence me. He told me about a similar situation he faced at Manchester City: extend or try something new.
“He told me about his experiences, his thoughts, and his role as a leader and role model – that was more valuable to me than if he had tried to persuade me.
“Of course, he said he would like me to stay in Munich. But he understood my situation was somewhat complex,” Kimmich added.
The 30-year-old German confirmed that he could have earned a lot more money at another club, but he wasn’t swayed by this perk.
“It’s about the overall structure. Money is a factor of course, but the most important question for me was the sporting perspective.
“Where do I have the best chance of regularly competing for the Champions League … and playing a key role and influencing the team.
“In the end, both factors spoke in favour of FC Bayern. Added to that, my family feels very comfortable here … Munich has become our home”, he concluded.
