Joshua Kimmich delivered another couple of strong performances last week against Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund. The German midfielder has been one of the consistent performers for Bayern Munich this season. After experiencing a slump in performances last season, Kimmich is back to his best under Vincent Kompany.
Bayern are also pleased with Kimmich's performances this campaign. The Bavarian club was open to parting ways with Kimmich in the summer, but the German international decided to enter the final year of his contract.
The perception of Kimmich has changed at Bayern. The club chiefs are working on a contract extension for the 29-year-old midfielder. Kimmich has held positive talks with Die Roten, but there is still work to do regarding a complete agreement. Kimmich can negotiate with interested clubs in January about a free transfer deal in the summer.
Kimmich will not take an entire season to decide about his future at Bayern Munich. While talking to ZDF studio (via iMiaSanMia) after the 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund, Kimmich revealed the potential period crucial for his future in Munich.
"It's a very, very important decision for me that has to be made. It will be good to see the bigger picture in winter - and to see what has happened. Because right now there are so many games, you go up and down emotionally every three days. Of course the past plays a role, but the future is more important"- Joshua Kimmich
Bayern will be pleased to hear that a final decision from Kimmich is coming soon. The Bavarian club can plan accordingly since they want clarity going into the new year and plan accordingly for the summer.
Along with confirming that a decision about his future will come in the winter break, Kimmich also insisted that he and his family feel settled in Munich. He also acknowledged the support of the club this season after getting back to his best under Kompany.
Kimmich had previously complained about a lack of support from club chiefs last season when he was struggling for form. However, the relationship between both parties has improved over the last few months. The prospect of spending the remainder of his peak years in Munich is a realistic option for Kimmich.
Bayern chiefs and senior players have tipped Kimmich to become the captain of the team once Manuel Neuer brings the curtains down on his career. The communication from club officials and players in the media about Kimmich suggests a contract extension is a mere formality.
Even though Bayern are expected to extend Kimmich’s contract, several big clubs are keeping a close eye on the German midfielder’s situation. Barcelona and Hansi Flick want him, while Manchester City have also been credited with concrete interest in the German midfielder.
The Bavarian faithful will not have to wait long for the suspense around Kimmich’s future would be over after December 21.
