The former Liverpool captain will join the Bees on a two-year contract until 2027, marking his return to the Premier League after two years.

Henderson is expected to sign paperwork and complete a medical over the weekend, but an official announcement is not expected until next week out of respect for the midfielder's former team-mate Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car crash last week.

Brentford identified Henderson, who has interest from clubs in England and Europe, as a target following the departure of captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal. The veteran midfielder is expected to fill the leadership void left by Norgaard.

The 35-year-old's experience, having made 431 Premier League appearances across spells with Liverpool and Sunderland, is viewed as important to Brentford in a summer where they have already lost Norgaard and long-serving head coach Thomas Frank.

Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, who contributed 39 Premier League goals between them last season, are also heavily linked with moves away, with Manchester United having already seen two bids rejected for Mbeumo.

Henderson, who has 84 England caps, has been brought back into the fold by Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel and the midfielder will be looking to make the squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Henderson will become Brentford's fourth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Antoni Milambo, Michael Kayode and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brentford travel to Portugal later in the month for their pre-season training camp. The rest of the first team squad, those who were away on international duty, return for the start of pre-season next Monday.
