In a move that has surprised many fans, John Herdman has officially stepped down as the head coach of Toronto FC. Herdman, who took the reins of the club in 2023, brought renewed hope and ambition to a team struggling after consecutive underwhelming seasons.
While expectations for Herdman were high, his tenure showcased glimpses of promise, particularly during the 2024 season. He worked tirelessly to address the team's issues, implementing changes aimed at reviving Toronto FC's fortunes. However, despite his efforts, the team fell short of major success.
Over his tenure, Herdman managed 47 matches, recording 17 wins, 4 draws, and 26 losses. While his efforts in fostering player development were evident, these results highlighted persistent challenges that he could not fully overcome.
The decision to part ways with Herdman appears to be part of a broader effort to rebuild the club and prepare for a more competitive campaign in 2025. Toronto FC now faces the task of finding a new head coach capable of addressing the team’s long-standing issues and capitalizing on its potential.
Herdman’s departure marks the end of a chapter that, while filled with ambition, failed to achieve the stability and success fans hoped for. As Toronto FC looks ahead, the focus will undoubtedly be on creating a strong foundation to reclaim its status as a top contender in MLS.
